When Columbus discovered the “New World” in 1492 he opened up the new continent for the European powers to establish colonies. The Spanish led the movement in the Americas and set a precedent where a small contingent of Europeans was able to defeat thousands of natives. After reading the documents below, you will be asked to formulate and analyze hypotheses that discuss the reasons why the outnumbered Spanish conquistadors were able to overpower the native populations.
